Kamehameha Schools (KS) current proposal includes adding a 150 room key boutique hotel (think 300+ more tourists) along with additional commercial space, large paved parking lots and connecting Kamehameha III Road with the south side of the bay for through traffic at an already fragile bay. Water testing has shown degraded quality over the years and there has been a noticeable reduction in sea life. This effects what is currently a mostly quiet residential neighborhood and one of the few places left for local `Ohana and their keiki to participate in youth programs, including volleyball. Kamehameha Schools has already proven and acknowledged their poor management of the area and there are plenty of commercial/restaurant spaces empty and available not only at the Keauhou Shopping Center but at the Outrigger. We do not need more space, retail or open, to caterer to tourist and visitors in our community. Some of the most sacred and important historical sites are facing the back of commercial buildings and the paved road come within feet of them. KS openly considers this area financially underachieving, and many are benefactors of the Trust. We are asking them to reconsider their plan, to contemplate the meaning of Malama `Aina before they forever change our home, and the landscape of the bay with overcrowding, overdeveloping and over polluting.
